Makhana, also known as Fox Nut or Gorgon Nut, is a treasured aquatic crop deeply rooted in the traditions of Mithila, Bihar. Revered for its nutritional and medicinal properties, Makhana is an integral part of Mithila’s food culture and is often used in festive delicacies, religious offerings, and community feasts. It is cultivated organically, supporting sustainable agriculture and preserving the purity and health benefits associated with this ancient crop.
Per 100 gm, Makhana provides approximately 347 kcal of energy, 9.7 g of protein, 76 g of carbohydrates, and only 0.1 g of fat. It is also a rich source of essential minerals such as iron, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, and sodium, making it a wholesome snack suitable for all age groups. Its low-fat content and high nutrient density have made it a preferred choice for health-conscious individuals.
In India, Makhana is primarily grown in North Bihar, where Mithila’s fertile wetlands and age-old farming practices create the perfect environment for its cultivation. Bihar accounts for nearly 90% of India’s total production, with about 80% coming from north-eastern Bihar. It is also cultivated in parts of Assam, West Bengal, and Odisha, yet Mithila remains the heartland of this crop.
Our initiative goes beyond cultivation – we are committed to empowering the local community through our Community (CSR) efforts. By supporting the farmers and women of Mithila, we are helping create livelihoods, preserve indigenous knowledge, and promote women’s participation in agriculture. Through training, fair pricing, and organic farming techniques, we aim to build a self-reliant and vibrant rural economy while respecting and celebrating Mithila’s rich cultural heritage.
Choosing our organic Makhana means embracing the authentic taste and health benefits of Mithila’s tradition while contributing to sustainable farming and the welfare of its communities.
